Zelle scams: "send it to yourself", fake bank calls and too-good deals

Updated . By the AskBeforeYouSend editorial team (how we fact-check). Fact-checked against the official sources listed at the bottom.

Short answer: Only use Zelle with people you know and trust. Zelle says to treat it like cash, because money sent to an enrolled user usually arrives within minutes. If you authorized a payment, even because you were tricked, you may not get it back. The FTC says your real bank will never contact you to tell you to transfer money or to ask for passcodes.

Key facts

What it looks like

This is the fraud department at your bank. Someone is trying to send $2,400 from your account. To block it, I'll walk you through sending the money to yourself with Zelle. Please stay on the line.

A made-up example based on the scheme the FTC and FBI describe.

How the scam works

  1. A text asks if you made a big payment. When you reply, a fake "bank" calls, sometimes showing your bank's real number.
  2. They tell you to "protect" or "reverse" money by sending it with Zelle to yourself or a "secure" account. That account is theirs.
  3. Other times a stranger selling tickets, a puppy or a rental insists you pay with Zelle, then disappears.

Red flags

What to do now

  1. Hang up. Call the number on the back of your card.
  2. Never send money because someone called or texted you about fraud.
  3. For people you don't know, Zelle suggests a credit card, which may offer buyer protection.
  4. If you sent money, call your bank right away and ask about a claim, then report it to the FTC and the FBI's IC3.
Never send money, gift cards, crypto or verification codes because of a call, text or message. Hang up and call the real number.

Questions

Will my bank give back money I lost in a Zelle scam?

It depends. Zelle says payments someone made without your permission are typically fraud, and you may have rights under federal rules. If you approved the payment because you were tricked, you may not get it back, though some qualifying Zelle payments can be reimbursed. Call your bank right away either way.

Can I cancel a Zelle payment?

Usually not once it reaches an enrolled user, which typically takes minutes. That's why Zelle says to treat it like cash. Call your bank immediately anyway.
